I often describe my mom as fabulous and feisty. What better words for a woman who at 92 years old, horseback rides regularly, travels the world, and exercises more in a week than I do in a month. Though what I admire most is her determination to never let age define her and to live life on her own terms. Mom is not someone you can tell what to do, ever… Some may find this frustrating. I say, mom, keep doing what you’re doing. It’s led to your golden years being filled with laughter, friends, and adventure.
When people tell us we shouldn’t do something because we’re too old, it wouldn’t be prudent, we won’t succeed, or whatever else, many of us listen. We believe these words. We let them define our reality. Not my mom. If you tell mom that she can’t do something, you bet she’ll find a way to do it. Mom has never been one to back down from a challenge. If anything, it motivates her even more.
If she believed the words of others, she’d never have ridden a horse through Malibu to visit Stanley, the famous giraffe. She wouldn’t have become friends with a charming Italian 20-something who told her she’s the most amazing woman he’s ever met. And she certainly wouldn’t be joining me on yearly road trips through Ireland. All of this at 91. I can’t wait to see what new adventures will come at 92.
So thank you mom for being utterly unique and spreading your inspiration to everyone we meet. But most of all, thank you for showing me that anything is possible and never to let others define me. Happy Birthday!
Awww! What a sweet tribute to your precious mother, Mara!! She sounds like truly a remarkable woman and one to be admired for sure!! Your overflowing love for her pours out of you so beautifully! I wish we can all be as vibrant as she is if we’re lucky enough to make it to 92 years of age. Wishing her a very big Happy Birthday and many more wonderful years to come!!! ?????
Thank you, Heidi! If you’re ever out near me, I’d love to introduce you to mom. She’s quite the storyteller and lunch date. Thanks for your wishes! ?
Happy Birthday to your Mom!! Wishing her a fun, exciting & adventurous time. As a Taurean as well, please tell your mom NEVER CHANGE! Yes we are stubborn, sometimes to a fault, but we never give up & we always keep pushing forward. We are resilient. Hope she enjoys her special day. She is an inspiration to me that yes I still will be able to travel when I’m older!
Have a fabulous time back in Ireland!! I can totally relate to how you feel about that beloved country & its people. Happy Birthday! Slainte! ??❤️
Thanks, Stephanie! Aw, I’ll pass along your message. Mom has the stubborn and feisty Taurean energy down, too! Love that you both are so resilient. Thanks for the Ireland wishes and I’ll be returning them to you, too, soon! ???
Happy Birthday to your mom! I love that she is living life to the fullest – and that she’s going back to Ireland. Hopefully I’ll be traveling around the world when I’m 92 – your mom is an inspiration to all of us. I will raise a glass in her honor today. Slainte!
Thanks, Kiera! She’s been loving hearing all of her birthday wishes today. We’ll raise a glass to you, too, in Ireland next month. ?
